The wind tunnel is an open circuit down stream fan type designed for studying the subsonic aerodynamics. It is to be used with optional accessories and models below.

The air enters the tunnel via a wire mesh screen and a flow straightener. A high contraction ratio section ensures uniform velocity across the transparent test section. Downstream of the working section is a low angle diffuser which terminates at the tunnel fan. The diffuser and contraction sections have a high quality internal finish to minimize the boundary layer effects. The fan impeller blades are of an aerofoil design cast aluminum to ensure maximum aerodynamic efficiency and minimum turbulence. Fan speed is adjustable by an inverter. 

Four equally spaced static pressure taps are connected to a manifold to minimize effects from a model. Air speed is indicated by an inclined manometer and a calibration graph. Models are mounted on two components balance support with digital display for measurement of drag and lift. Model holder can be rotated to allow quick change on the angle of incidence.  This angle is indicated on an angular scale.

The tunnel is on a frame with adjustable footings for table top mounting.

The apparatus is intended for visualization of stream lines flow around models.

The test set is for studying the two stage reciprocating air compressor characteristics.
For educational purpose, the two stages are separated and can be operated at different speeds. Both stages are connected by vee-belts to the same motor with an advanced inverter. The second stage compressor has three alternative pulleys to vary the pressure ratio between the two stages. An intercooler is provided between first and second stage. The channel is designed for studying the sediment transport and bed forms as well as flow phenomena without sediment. It is a service unit to be used with optional accessories and models. Instruction manual is also included.

Under Frame

The channel bed rests on twin I-beam under frame which ensures static loading deflections are kept to a minimum. The length of the I-beam is about 6 m Each section is shipped with glass side walls. This simplifies site installation as there are less joints and is easier to ensure straight side walls throughout the length. To ensure minimum deflection, the I beam base frame of 18 m is supported by a fulcrum at the middle and adjustable height support at both upstream and downstream ends for a total of 3 supports.

Slope Adjustment

Each adjustable height support uses twin screws and with a system of worm and wheel gear boxes and miter gears which are intern driven by a motor. A slope scale is provided at one end of the flume.

Channel Bed

The channel bed is made of stainless steel with twin screw holes of equal distance along the channel length to hold accessories or models to the flume bed when used as a normal tilting flow channel. These holes can also be used for pressure tapping points to measure pressure loss along the channel length.

Side Walls

For safety reasons, the side walls are made of tempered glass. The walls are supported at interval by brackets with screws for vertical position adjustment.

Instrument Carriage

Top rails made of stainless steel tubes are attached to the top angle on each wall of the channel. Screws supporting the rails can be adjusted to ensure uniform height and in a straight line. A scale graduated in mm. is attached along the full length of one top angle of the walls. The instrument carriage is manually operated.

Head Tank

The head tank is made of stainless steel and its sides and bottom are curved to ensure smooth flow into the channel. Perforated plates are also provided in the head tank to further smoothen the flow.

Sediment Feeder

The channel bed may be filled by a sediment feeder with a slope stopper upstream and another one just before sediment trap at the downstream end of the channel. Feeding is by a screw.

Sediment Trap

A Sediment trap is provided at the downstream end of the channel. The trapped sediment can be discharged by

 a bottom value. The trap is covered when used as a normal flow channel.

Storage Tank

An underground concrete storage tank is recommended as standard. This tank is to be built by the user. However, above ground tank is available (optional).

Walkway

A steel walkway with a checker plate floor and side rails is provided on both side of the flume for ease of model installation and flow observations.

Circulating Pump

The pump is ceramic coated to minimize wear by sediment abrasion. A mechanical seal is used. A geared butterfly valve is provided to control accurate rate of flow.

Flow measurement

A flow digital display is used. In the case of an underground storage tank, a measuring tank with a calibrated weir is available as an option. The flow rate is controlled by a geared butterfly valve.

Model and Accessories

In the case of no sediment, the channel may be used as a normal tilting flow channel. All accessories and models have side seals to ensure no water seep or leak through the sides of the models. A wide variety of models and accessories are available as an option.

The channel is designed for studying the hydraulic flow phenomena. It is a service unit to be used with optional accessories and models. Instruction manual is also included.

 

Under Frame

The channel is designed for studying the hydraulic flow phenomena. It is a service unit to be used with optional accessories and models below. Instruction manual is also included.

 

Under Frame

The channel bed rests on twin beam under frame which ensures static loading deflections are kept to a minimum. Each section is shipped with glass side walls. This simplifies site installation as there is only one joint and is easier to ensure alignment of the channel. The beams are supported by a fulcrum at one end and an adjustable height support at the other end.

 

Slope Adjustment

The adjustable height support uses twin screws. Each screw is driven by a worm and wheel gear box with a common motor. A slope scale is provided at one end of the flume.

 

Channel Bed

The channel bed is made of stainless steel with screw holes of equal distance along the channel length to hold accessories or models to the channel bed. These holes can also be used for pressure tapping to measure pressure loss along the channel length.

 

Side Walls

For safety reasons, the side walls are made of tempered glass or clear acrylic. The walls are supported at interval by brackets with screw adjustment to ensure that the channel wall is straight and vertical.

 

Instrument Carriage

Top rails made of stainless steel tubes are attached to the top angle on each wall of the channel. Screws supporting the rails can be adjusted to ensure uniform height and in a straight line. A scale graduated in mm. is attached along the full length of one top angle of the walls. The instrument carriage is manually operated.

 

Head Tank

The head tank is made of stainless steel and bottom slope to ensure smooth flow into the channel. Perforated sheets are also provided in the head tank to further smoothen the flow.

 

Storage Tank

The storage tank has adequate water to fill the full channel. Fiber glass storage tank(s) is provided at downstream end of the channel. Capacity of tank varies according to channel length.

 

Model Installation

A mobile ladder is used. In the case of small fiber glass tanks (optional) are used, the top covers of the tanks (optional) are used as a walkway and model installation.

 

Circulating Pump

The pump seal is mechanical. A geared butterfly valves is provided for accurate flow control.

 

Flow measurement

A flow digital display is used for easy observation on flow adjustment. A water meter is available as an option and may be used as a reference for flow indicator setting later.

The settlement of river water sediments over a long period of time results is a shallow river bed. Occasional dredging may be required to deepen the river bed for navigation purpose. The adjustable bed flow channel allows a study of flow under the simulated shallow and deepened river bed.

This is a self contained open channel designed for studying flow phenomena with change in bed slope. It is a service unit to be used with optional accessories and models below.

The channel is of rectangular cross section supported by rectangular steel frame. Side walls are transparent to allow full observation and are supported by adjustable steel brackets to ensure accurate wall alignment.  Tilting can be adjusted by a manual screw jack. The middle section of the bed can be adjusted manually upward or downward by a screw. A head tank with a stilling baffle provides a smooth flow and water is returned to the storage tank via an end tank. Models are attached to the top edges or bed of the flume by screws. Screw holes at the bed can also be used for pressure tapping to measure pressure loss along the channel length.
