This equipment demonstrates a process for separation of a mixture (one soluble in another) of two liquids of different boiling points.

The unit consists of reboiler, two distillation columns, condenser, reflux tank, top product tank, feed tanks with feed pump, feed preheater, bottom product tanks, measuring instruments, and other accessories.

An initial feed is added to the reboiler where the vapor with higher concentration of the lower boiling point component rises in the distillation column. The vapor leaves the top and is condensed in the condenser and collected in the reflux tank. Part of the condensate in the reflex tank is fed back to the top of the column where heat exchange is taken place with the rising vapor. This results in the vapor phase being richer in the lower boiling point component, and the liquid phase being richer in the higher boiling point component. The liquid phase moves down to the reboiler.

The feed is pumped from feed tanks, preheated in a preheater, before delivery to the distillation column. The feed is partially evaporated in the column on its way to the bottom where it is heated to boiling.

The hot mixture in the reboiler is rich in higher boiling point components is used to preheat the feed and collected in the bottom product tanks.

Two columns, sieve plate column and packed column with Rasching rings, can be interchanged simply by valve control. Lagging is provided for reboiler, sieve column, condenser, and preheater.

The unit is installed on a stainless steel frame.

Instruction manual is also included.

This bench top equipment is for studying the behavior of a fluidized bed and heat transfer coefficient of a hot surface in a fluidized bed.

The unit consists of a glass cylinder with a bottom chamber and a top assembly. The bottom chamber has as a built-in air distributor. The distributor can be replaced by a locally designed one for students and other investigations. The top assembly consists of an air filter and a heating element, temperature probes and a pressure probe. The glass cylinder assembly is attached to a panel through the top assembly and can be easily removed and installed.

The glass cylinder is partially filled with granular bed material. Air is supplied to the bottom chamber. The air fluidizes the bed material and escapes to the atmosphere through the top filter.

The unit consists of two parts: a multi section bar for linear heat conduction studies, and a metal disc for radial heat conduction studies.

. Linear Heat Conduction Unit.

The unit has 3 sections which can be pressed tightly together. The first section is for heat input where a heater and three temperature sensors at 10 mm interval are installed. The center section has three temperature sensors at 10 mm interval. The last section is a heat sink section where cooling water and two temperature sensors at 20 mm interval are installed.

Matching surfaces of the heat conduction section are accurately finished to minimize conduction resistance and a heat conducting compound may be applied to further reduce resistance. Thermal conductivity of an insulation material can be determined by inserting a thin insulating disc between two heat conduction surfaces.

The deep bed filter is a demonstration unit for treatment of water with suspended particles by sand filtration.

The unit consists of a filtration column is fitted with vertical row of pressure tapping points on one side and similar sampling points on the other side. Both ends of the column are closed with flanges for liquid inlet and outlet. A pump delivers raw water from the raw water tank to the top of the column. Suspended particles are trapped in the sand filter as water flow down through the column to the bottom via filter. The treated water is collected from the bottom in a treated water tank. Hoses connect pressure from the tappings along the side of the column to a manometer bank. Samples of raw water is collected from the sampling points on the side of the column. A manometer bank is provided for measurement of pressure along the column.

Overtime more particles are deposited in the filter which increases the pressure drop across the filter and flow rate decreases. Backwashing is required using treated or clean water and pressure drop is reduced again. Required pipings are provided.

The filter unit is on a steel frame.

Instruction manual is also included.
